Cosmic Creatures Truck Projection Mapping
Hey, thanks for expressing interest in providing some content for our projection mapping on the Cosmic Creatures truck! The setup is on the side of a 16′ box truck, with the Cosmic Creatures name in 2″ high foam letters:
There are basically two layers at different heights, the letters and the background. I imagine most projections will have something different on each layer, working together. So you might have a very busy pattern for the background with a solid color for the letters, or vice versa. Or maybe you can come up with some cool interactions between layers. I’ll probably mask off the sides of the letters so no projection will be visible on the side surfaces of the letters. I also don’t yet have a specific template showing where each letter is, so you can’t really do stuff where each letter is doing something different. I’ll add a template for that when I can.
I plan to run this “unattended” (without a laptop) using MadMapper software running on their MiniMad device (a modified Raspberry Pi). The main limitations are the output video size must be 1920×1080, and only one video can be played at a time. However, the input video size can be larger, so in order to get two layers, the input video is 1920×1630. The top 1920×1080 is the background, and the bottom 1920×550 is for the letters. For example:
Content can be static images or video in those sizes in png/jpg or mpg/mov. If you have content that is just for the background, or just for the letters, I can accept content in 1920×1080 or 1920×550 format and I can fill in the missing part to get it up to 1920×1630.
One other minor annoyance is that the MiniMad plays back content like a slide show. So it plays one video, then everything goes black for 1-2 seconds, and then the next video starts. It’s a limitation of the current MiniMad software, but I’d still rather use that than having to dedicate a laptop to the setup. Depending on the content, I’ll probably apply a short fade on and fade off to make things more smooth.
I’m hoping to have 30-50 different “scenes” that the MiniMad can randomly pick from, where each scene lasts ~30 seconds. That’s just a rough guideline so things don’t switch to quickly to feel chaotic, and not to slowly so things get boring. Ideally I would do a different theme each day or something, but IDK if I’ll have enough content for that initially.
So if you want to provide content, please create it in the resolutions listed above and DM me a link. If we’re not already talking on some medium, IG or FB messenger is usually the best way to reach me.
Thanks!
